2012/2013 Inaugural Lectures

PROFESSOR GABRIEL OLADAPO ADEYEMI’S INAUGURAL LECTURE

Professor Gabriel Oladapo Adeyemi of the Department of Geology gave his inaugural lecture on Thursday, 22 February, 2013 on behalf of the Faculty of Science at the Trenchard Hall. His area of specialization is geological engineering and so his lecture was titled “Engineering Geology: the Big Heart for Structures and the Environment”. The lecture educated the non-initiates of geology on the importance of geology and geologists in construction works by highlighting the functions of geological data and analysis in ensuring the durability and functionality of structures, ranging from roads to dump sites. He also mentioned the termitaria building activities of termites in helping to better understand the nature of soils. He made a lot of reference to his works in southwestern Nigeria and the contributions of same to a better understanding of the soils of Nigeria, which he said are “similar but are certainly not identical”. Professor Adeyemi wrapped up his lecture by admonishing that “this is an important key to national peace and development”, as Nigerians are also similar but certainly “not identical in outlook, actions and reactions”.
