The University of Ibadan yesterday matriculated 3,169 students out of the over 50,000 candidates that applied for admission into the institution.The Vice Chancellor, Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole in his welcome address was delighted and advised the students to make the best use of the opportunity of studying at the University.
He said students should be decent, dedicated, committed and loyal to the school. He reminded them to take cognizance of the oath of allegiance administered to them as a guide to help them have a peaceful stay on campus. He further enjoined them to develop worthy characters and allow the school to pass through them as they pass through the school. Professor Adewole also advised the matriculants to shun cultism and be security conscious at all times.
The guest lecturer at the occasion, Professor Adedoyin Soyibo in his lecture titled "The Ibadan brand of University Education: Making the Best of its Opportunities", reminded the students that their admission to the University of Ibadan has put them in a special class of Nigerians with a unique tradition as they have the opportunity of drinking from the Pierian spring of knowledge that produced Professor Wole Soyinka, the first Nobel laureate in Literature in Africa and the only Nobel laureate in any field in Nigeria. He admonished them to be actively involved in all activities germane to their training and moral upbringing and gave practical ways of achieving the vision of the university for each of the students in the followings ways:
- Taking their studies serious from the onset
- Seeing all courses as important
- Seeking to be creative and innovative in all that they do
- Using the available programmes of the university to take advantage of the Ibadan brand .
He concluded by advising the matriculants to be focused in order to benefit from the Ibadan brand of university education.
With the matriculation ceremony, the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry now has 332 new students; Arts, 423; Education, 440; Law, 141; Pharmacy, 100; Science, 533; Technology, 340; the Social Sciences, 361; Veterinary Medicine, 86; and College of Medicine, 413.
