THE SEVENTH IN THE 2013/2014 SESSION INAUGURAL LECTURE SERIES

Water, e no get enemy, omi o l’ota o, water, e no get enemy! The popular Fela song was the theme song during the 7th in the series of inaugural lectures for the 2013/2014 session of the University. The lecture, delivered by Professor Oluwole Akinyele Agbede, was titled “Numerical Modeling: a Veritable Tool in Water Resources Management.”

In the lecture, Prof. Agbede said water is abundant in the country but not delivered appropriately due to global challenges such as population growth, land use changes, urbanization and migration from rural to urban areas. He noted that despite the progress that has been made in improving water supply, Nigerians still have no access to modern water supply, and stressed that there is a very keen consciousness of the importance of adequate water supply and the need to make it readily accessible to the entire populace.

Prof. Agbede advised that since water wields spherical power in the existence of mankind, the federal government should promulgate a unified national policy on ground water exploration and exploitation as well as encourage funding for research in sustainable training and national development. He added that a national water data bank should be established which will be fed with data related to water resources.
