Medical Induction

COLLEGE OF MEDICINE'S 2011/2012 INDUCTION CEREMONY FOR MBBS AND BDS GRADUANDS
The College of Medicine today, 25 February, 2013, inducted 128 medical doctors and 22 dental surgeons. According to the provost of the College, Professor O.O. Akinyinka, the ceremony was unprecedented as 91% of the MBBS candidates presented for the final examinations were successful and the last time such a feat was observed was in 1972. As for the dental surgery graduands, 73% of them had been successful in their final examinations.

At the occasion which took place at the International Conference Centre in UI, the inductees were charged by the guest lecturer, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, the provost of the College of Medicine, UNILAG, to be true to the Hippocratic Oath. By giving different statistics to show the current abysmal state of the nation's health sector, the guest lecturer who is also the first female professor of medical microbiology in Nigeria also urged the graduands to give back to the country which she said heavily subsidized their education. This she said they could do by giving Nigeria their time, labour and heart. This, by and large, was the message given to the inductees by the other dignitaries at the occasion, ranging from provosts of other colleges of medicine, to the invited Medical Elder, Dr. John Oyediran Olabisi and also the Dental Elder, Dr. Babatunde Olatokunbo. Dr. John Oyediran Olabisi even went further to say that the inductees should only consider further studies and experience abroad but should not entertain thoughts of living permanently outside the country, as Nigeria really needs their services.

A number of the inductees received awards. Apart from the best graduating MBBS and dental students who were given "golden handshakes" by members of the high table, including the Vice-Chancellor, Professor I.F. Adewole, who chaired the occasion, and the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Arinola Sanya, four of the graduands received awards for their good interaction with their community, classmates and patients. Among these four was Ezomo Olohirere, the winner of the fifth Superbowl wits and words competition, which held last year. There was also the Professor Akinkugbe's award for outstanding leadership. In addition, May and Baker, a foremost pharmaceutical company, gave each of the graduands a stethoscope for successfully completing their medical studies. To crown it all, the Chief Medical Director of the University College Hospital,  Professor Temitope Alonge, announced the reenactment of the college's tradition of offering the best 20% of the inductees house job posts at the UCH. This came as a pleasant surprise to the students, especially when he declared that for their set, the best 25% percent of the MBBS graduands and the best 20% of the dental surgery graduands would be so honoured.

The Provost of the College of Medicine, Professor O.O. Akinyinka, reminded the graduands to be sure to attend the school Convocation ceremony later in the year, after which they will become graduates of the University of Ibadan. He said that the induction ceremony was a professional one which did not take the place of the academic one.

The Commencement of 2012/2013 Session Inaugural Lectures

PROFESSOR ADEREMI RAJI-OYELADE'S INAUGURAL LECTURE

The Dean of Arts, Professor Aderemi Raji-Oyelade, gave his inaugural lecture on behalf of the Faculty of Arts on 14 February, 2013 at the historic Trenchard Hall. Faculty of Arts is the premier faculty and so its inaugural came first in the session. In the lecture titled "Fluent In(ter)ventions: Webs of the Literary Discipline", Professor Raji-Oyelade elaborated on the need for a collaboration between science and technology and the humanities. Without actually appearing to do so, he encouraged his audience to embrace the tools of technology, particularly the computer, regardless of their discipline. Since literature is anything that can be taught, then the computer and the internet are veritable tools for the literary scholar whose webs, much like the world wide web, spread in all directions.

KSA in UI

KING SUNNY ADE VISITS UI

A distinguished personality colloquium organised by the Institute of African Studies in honour of Sunday Adegeye, popularly known as King Sunny Ade (KSA) was held on 14 February, 2013, at the Conference Centre. The occasion has left an indelible mark on the Institute, the University of Ibadan and also the Vice Chancellor, who said he had looked forward to meeting KSA right from his secondary school days. The Vice Chancellor made this remark when the ace musician paid a courtesy call on him in his office. Thereafter, KSA proceeded to the venue of the event, where the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) represented the Vice Chancellor. The event was attended by various chieftains, among whom were the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade; the Afaaji of Faaji, Oba Moshood Olawale Olaleke; the Onigbaye of Igbaye, Oba Morounfade Ogunlola; the Amuludun of Oyo, Oloye Yemi Ogunyemi; and the Ikolaba Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oloye Lekan Alabi.

Various papers giving insights on the man and his music were presented at the conference. Oloye Lekan Alabi presented the first paper on "The KSA I Know" where he described KSA as a humorous, humble, godly and philosophical teetotaler. Professor Tunji Vidal presented a paper titled, "Understanding African Music" in which he mentioned that an understanding of African music is an understanding of African way of life as seen in the music of KSA. In his own paper titled, "A Conflict Manager's Reading of KSA", Professor Albert of the Institute of African Studies highlighted what he referred to as KSA's conflict resolution strategies. He said that in the face of adversity and competition, KSA, as reflected in his music, reverts to confrontation only when strategic withdrawal and joint problem solving options fail in resolving conflicts. Dr. Sola Olorunyomi, also of the Institute of African Studies spoke on "Ijinle through Pop" and he portrayed KSA as writing danceable songs which espouse the Yoruba ideals. He also commended KSA his skillful use of drums and other cultural elements to compose songs in a contemporary parlance. The last paper was presented by Dr. Kayode Samuel who is also a faculty member in the Institute of African Studies. His paper was titled, "The Ecumenical KSA" and it celebrated the efforts of KSA as a uniting force among local musicians and as an "African music missionary". It also touched on the ability of KSA to excite his audience, regardless of their ethnic and religious backgrounds.

King Sunny Ade was given a Distinguished Personality Award by the Institute and the Ooni of Ife, Professor Tunji Vidal, Oloye Lekan Alabi and Prince Tunde Odunlade were awarded as well. To round off the occasion, KSA gave a live performance where he thrilled his audience with his unique dance steps.

Faculty of Pharmacy Induction

50 Students Inducted into the Pharmacy Profession

The Faculty of Pharmacy today inducted 50 graduands into the Pharmacy profession. According to Professor J.O. Moody, the dean of the faculty, this year's graduating class makes history by having as many as 50 graduands, where the faculty is used to graduating much fewer students. For this set, 52 students began the journey, but only two were not successful.

The Graduands
The graduands, who referred to their class as unparalled because of the minimum percentage of drop-outs, were advised by the guest speaker, Pharmacist Samson 'Yomi Osewa, to be pharmacists of integrity and excellence. The Acting Secretary of the Pharmacists' Council of Nigeria, Pharmacist (Mrs) Gloria Abumere, who admitted them into the Pharmacists' Council of Nigeria, also assured the graduands that success would be their reward if they chose to work hard.

The 2013 Matriculation Ceremony

U.I. MATRICULATES 2, 723 STUDENTS

Yesterday, Friday, 01 February 2013, the University of Ibadan celebrated the 2, 723 students who scaled through the admission hurdles and became bona fide student-members of the institution. At the matriculation ceremony held at the increasingly popular International Conference Centre, the students were congratulated by the Vice Chancellor, Professor I. F. Adewole, on their successful entry into the University. He emphasized that they were the few who were chosen among the 41,000 plus candidates who applied to study in the University of Ibadan.

The matriculation lecturer, who is also an alumnus of U.I., Professor V.O. Omodo of the University of Uyo, joined the Vice Chancellor in congratulating the students. In his lecture titled "Balancing the Protest Culture Among Undergraduate Students with Making the Best Use of the Golden Opportunity for Academic Excellence", the seasoned lecturer was of the opinion that Nigerian students are known for a culture of protest when they perceive any negligence of duty among administrators. He, however, assured the matriculants that the university authorities had taken and were still taking steps to ensure that the new students had a good tertiary education experience on the U.I. campus. He enjoined the matriculants to be worthy students who do not vandalize school facilities thereby endangering the chance of the future generation of using same facilities.
